Whether you are an addict or not, addiction is still a big part of your life, and you may not even know it. Addicts are people with a deadly disease, and we want to share some things we want you to know.

Addicts Want You To Know

It’s important for those of us who are in recovery from addiction to let you know that we are not weak and we are not defined by our disease.

We are all different, but we are your family member, your friend, your lover, your doctor, the soccer mom, the college student, maybe even the person in line with you at the coffee shop. We are productive members of society who are happy, healthy and free. We love to help others and rarely share about why or how we do it. We are hidden among the crowd of people in a society that doesn’t even know we are there. We are people just like you.

A recent BuzzFeed video talks about the stigma of addiction by sharing what real addicts want you to know.

One woman described addiction perfectly when she said, “The feeling you get when you’re just… underwater for so long and you’re just waiting to come up for air. And addiction is never being able to reach the top.”

A very important detail that this video also expresses is that addicts do not start off as addicts. It starts out with social, casual drinking and maybe even casual drug use. Since addiction is progressive, the addict may not know how badly they are addicted until the disease has completely taken over them and their life.

Addiction is like your brain is lying to you and tricking you into thinking that what you are doing is normal and that you are still in control. If you don’t understand addiction, you probably think addicts just don’t care. What is really happening is that they are in the thick of a deadly disease and they don’t fully know it. Without help, most addicts will struggle and ultimately die from the disease of addiction.

So, when we recover and we share that we were an addict, know that it’s not because we are weak, but because we are actually strong. We have been able to recover from a progressive disease that wants us dead. We share our very personal experience with others so that they, too, can recover, even if we are scared that society may judge us for our past. We are full of gratitude and thankfulness because we are no longer drowning. We are some of the most positive, happy, and joyous people you will ever meet. We just wanted you to know us for us and not our disease.

The next time you meet an addict, I invite you to get to know them for them, before you judge. It just might change your life, too.
