Synthetic Pot Continues to Be Abused and Brings Deadly Results

Sharethis Watershed

Synthetic pot continues to bring devastation to those who abuse it. The tragic story of Connor Eckhardt’s death at just 19 years young highlights the dangers that unregulated drugs – especially synthetic ones – can bring.

Synthetic Pot

For a parent, the thought of losing their child can be unfathomable, but it was a harsh reality that Devin and Veronica Eckhardt had no other choice but to face.  After smoking what was thought to be a minuscule amount of synthetic pot, Connor Eckhardt went to sleep while his body began to shut down, ultimately bringing him to a comatose state.  Doctors would later tell the parents that their son would not come out of his catastrophic state; the Eckhardts chose to honor Connor’s wishes by allowing his organs to be donated.  This allowed the family to spend four days saying their goodbyes to an unresponsive Connor.

In this amount of time, the family created a video to send out as a message to the public in order to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs like synthetic pot.  Veronica, Connor’s mother, reached out with her last words in the announcement being, “He made the deadly choice to use a product called K2, or spice, and Connor is completely brain-dead.  This is not a game.  It is totally real.  Please help us fight his fight.”  Connor’s father, Devin, tried to relay where his son was coming from, “He gave into thinking that it was okay, [that] it was somehow safe. One hit later, he goes to sleep and never wakes up.”

Just Say No

The severity of drugs like synthetic pot goes widely unnoticed by the majority of its abusers.  It is important to know that synthetic versions of drugs are not safe just because they are legal in some states.  The people who take the drugs tend to falsely believe that they know what they are putting into their bodies.  Dr. Andrew Monte vocalized this and added that synthetic pot is “dangerous, up to 1,000 times stronger binding to cannabis receptors when compared to traditional marijuana.”  In fact, synthetic pot was responsible for 11,000 visits to the emergency room during the year 2010.

Although more information is coming out about synthetic pot, it is still being abused. The misconception that synthetic drugs are “safer” than other more widely-known illegal drugs is not only false, but has proven to be deadly.  Awareness needs to be spread about synthetic drugs and drug abuse if we are going to stop it.  No family should ever have to suffer the tragic consequence that Connor’s family has had to.  By regularly communicating with one another and talking about drug abuse, we can help prevent future deaths.
