Over A 100 People Overdose From Synthetic Marijuana In Texas

Sharethis Watershed

In less than a week, nearly 120 people overdosed in Texas from a drug that has not officially been banned by any federal or state laws yet. Synthetic marijuana, also known as spice or K2, is a synthetic chemical that supposedly simulates the effects of marijuana, it literally can be bought at your local gas station or online, and is usually packaged in small, fun colored bags clearly labeled, “Not for Human Consumption”.

Synthetic Marijuana Overdose

Police immediately starting investigating once they realized the amount of overdoses in such a short period of time were taking place. Police believe the synthetic marijuana that the victims had overdosed came from the same supplier in Dallas, TX.  In addition to the frightening reality of the massive overdoses, some patients had to be sedated before the doctors could even start treatment. Dr. James d’Etienne of Dallas’s Baylor Medical Center stated that, “several of [the patients] came in with similar symptoms of psychosis, altered mental status, abnormal behavior.” In the meantime, the Dallas police are investigating the synthetic marijuana to see if the chemical was laced with any other substances.

We hope that this has been a strong warning, urging all those who may smoke synthetic weed to discontinue use before they become the next victim of overdose. Some serious side effects of synthetic marijuana may include:  psychotic breakdown, paranoia, suicidal thoughts and/or attempts, delusions, rapid heart rate that could last weeks. Since synthetic marijuana has not been around long, there have not been any long-term studies done to see how these chemicals could affect the body long-term.
