How To Stay Sober During Saint Patrick’s Day

sober-saint-patricks-day-texasFor those who are in recovery, it may be tempting to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day by getting drunk or high, but just because you are tempted, doesn’t mean you have to do it. Here are some great suggestions to help you get through Saint Patrick’s Day without losing your recovery time.

Staying Sober On Saint Patrick’s Day

12-Step Meetings

Make sure you have all your meetings ready to go for the entire week. This way you have lots of support and recovery surrounding you during the holiday weekend. Talk to your sober supports about your fears and be sure to take any suggestions that promote the health of your recovery.

Meditation is a great practice for those trying to settle their nerves and feel at peace, especially during difficult times. If you find yourself overwhelmed and full of anxiety, take a deep breath and start practicing some meditation techniques to help you get through it.

Be Honest

Be honest with your sponsor, in meetings, and with sober supports. This is a time where you need as much support as you can while you navigate staying sober through certain holidays. The more honest you are, the better advice you will get.

Skip The Drunken Scene

Skip going to any party that has a lot of drinking, and definitely skip any bar crawls that are happening. There is no reason you need to go head first into an environment that promotes heavy partying if you are trying to stay sober.

Create New Celebrations

As you continue on in your sobriety, you are going to be building new memories, so now is a great time to start. Ask what other sober friends are doing and plan on celebrating this St. Patrick’s Day sober and happy with them.

Party Sober

St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t intended to be about getting drunk – it’s actually about celebrating the life of the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. Don’t let others make you feel like you need to be drunk in order to celebrate this holiday. The reality is, you don’t have to drink to have a great time. Remember, just because it feels like everyone else is doing it, doesn’t make it true. Recovery is amazing and the longer you stay sober, the more you will see.
