Overdose Deaths Have Tripled Since 1999 From Prescription Painkillers

Sharethis Watershed

Overdose deaths from prescription painkillers (narcotics) have tripled since 1999 according to a new report put out by the government. Nearly half of all Americans are on narcotics and an estimated 10% are prescribed these painkillers.

Prescription Painkillers

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) the report found prescription painkiller overdose deaths (ages 15 and older) accounted for approximately 6 deaths for every 100,000 people in the United States in 2009 – 2010. Those numbers are frightening considering only a decade earlier (1999-2000) it was an estimated 1 death per 100,000 people.

The rising numbers of Americans taking prescription painkillers has to be addressed and it starts with the consumers. Yes, there are bad doctors out there over-prescribing, but it is also our responsibility to stop using drugs that no longer serve their purpose.

What Can I Do To Help Stop The Abuse Of Prescription Painkillers?

Proper Disposal Of Narcotics

The National Take-Back Initiative was started by the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration to help properly dispose of unwanted narcotics. By safely disposing unused prescription drugs, you could help prevent children, teens, and anyone susceptible to abusing drugs from obtaining the pills.

NIDA for Teens: Drug Abuse Education

Educate your teens about the dangers of prescription pill abuse today. Ignoring the topic of drugs in hopes that your teen will not engage in their use can cause them more harm. Not knowing the real facts about drugs, teens are more likely to experiment with use. This can lead to drug addiction later in life, or depending on the child, in a few years.
