Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies of Drug Overdose

Just before noon this past Sunday, news broke that Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman had died of an apparent drug overdose at the age of 46. Hoffman’s body was discovered in his New York apartment; a hypodermic needle was still in his arm.

According to the New York Post, nearly 70 small bags of heroin, along with numerous prescription drugs, were found in the troubled star’s Bethune Street residence. Several of the heroin bags were branded with “Ace of Spades” and “Ace of Hearts” logos. Narcotics investigators are using the branding detail to search for the drug source.

Hoffman was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy is scheduled to be performed today.

Reaction to PSH’s death from around the web

Widely admired for his acting talents, many of Hoffman’s famous pals took to Twitter to express their sadness and condolences for the star’s family after learning about the tragedy.

·         Jim Carey: “Dear Philip, a beautiful beautiful soul. For the most sensitive among us the noise can be too much. Bless your heart. ;^{

·         Ellen DeGeneres: Philip Seymour Hoffman was a brilliant, talented man. The news this morning is shocking and sad. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

·         Aaron Paul: We lost one of the greats today. Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP my friend. You will be missed always and forever.

·         Christina Applegate: I have no words. You will be missed.

A response that broke the mold

Family and friends continued to echo their grief throughout the day Sunday across news outlets and social media. Actor Jared Padalecki (star of Supernatural), however, voiced a different opinion on the matter, sparking heavy criticism.

Padalecki’s original tweet was deleted, but not before being picked up by online media publication Jezebel.  Before taking it down, here’s what Padalecki had to say: “’Sad’ isn’t the word I’d use to describe a 46-year-old man throwing his life away to drugs. ‘Senseless’ is more like it. ‘Stupid’.”

After receiving slew of negative responses on the issue, Padalecki removed the tweet and later clarified his thoughts, saying “I didnt mean PSH is stupid or that addiction isnt a reality. I simply meant I have a different definition of ‘tragedy’.”

Addiction at its worst

While Padalecki backpedaled a bit, his point seemed to have some resonance with at least some of his followers. More than 5400 favorited his follow-up tweet, and another 2000+ re-tweeted it.

Although his remarks were called “…dismissive – and downright flippant” by Jezebel, Padalecki’s thoughts bring the topic of addiction to its most real, ugly light: addiction kills. It is an awful affliction that impacts the lives of so many people beyond just the addicts. Philip Seymour Hoffman openly struggled with addiction, admitting himself to rehab as recently as May 2013.

Hoffman lost his battle this weekend, leaving behind his longtime partner, Mimi O’Donnell and their three children.
