NCADD: April Is Alcohol Awareness Month

Alcohol-awareness-monthApril is Alcohol Awareness Month and is sponsored by NCADD (National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence). This weekend kicks off their first big event: “Alcohol-Free Weekend,” starting April 4-6, 2014. NCADD requests that everyone participate by being alcohol-free for at least 72 hours straight. You can join their Facebook event here: NCADD Announces Alcohol-Free Weekend and don’t forget to like their page by clicking here: NCADDNational. NCADD is one of the leading advocacy organizations in the world that raises awareness, provides educational tools and resources, while giving information to help prevent and treat alcoholism and drug addiction.

Every year NCADD has a theme in which they promote Alcohol Awareness Month. They are usually very inspiring and pretty catchy, but this year’s theme really hit home for those of us who have worked long and hard in the addiction treatment field. We here at The Watershed believe in this year’s theme so very much because we have had the opportunity to witness it firsthand.

Alcohol Awareness Month History

Alcohol Awareness Month first started in 1987 to help eliminate the stigma that is associated with the suffering alcoholic and alcoholism. The goal was to encourage communities to reach out and support alcoholism recovery and help raise awareness. Since then, hundreds of organizations have popped up to show their support in helping alcoholics recover from alcoholism, and preventing future alcohol dependency problems.
