Matthew Perry: Advocate For People Struggling With Drugs In Texas

Matthew Perry, former “Friends” star, will be heading to Houston, T X this May to talk treatment. Perry’s own struggle with alcohol and drugs has pushed him to help raise money for addiction treatment programs. We have seen celebrity addicts hitting rock bottom, but rarely do we hear about celebrities who are in recovery and being of service to help other sick and suffering addicts. Matthew Perry, Russell Brand, Kristen Johnston, and Robert Downy Jr. are just a few of those celebrities acting as advocates for addicts everywhere and they deserve some media recognition.

Matthew Perry Drugs To Recovery

On May 1, 2014, Matthew Perry will share his experience, strength, and hope from addiction to recovery at The 31st Waggoners Foundation Speaker Series’ 31st Annual Spring Luncheon. This year, the luncheon will be held at the Hilton Americas-Houston and the Texas recovery community couldn’t be more excited.

Matthew Perry’s addiction to drugs (prescription pills) and alcohol lasted for years before he came into recovery. He has since publicly talked about his past and his sobriety today, in an effort to give other addicts (celebrity and non-celebrities alike) hope that recovery from the disease of addiction is possible. Perry was quoted as saying, “A lot of people think that addiction is a choice. A lot of people think it’s a matter of will. That has not been my experience. I don’t find it to have anything to do with strength.”

Matthew Perry Drugs & Voice For Treatment

A recent study done in Texas by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) stated that on average, 63.9% of people suffering from substance abuse problems did not receive treatment.

The level of untreated addiction to drugs and alcoholism in Texas is alarming. There are many people suffering in silence who either can’t get help or don’t know how. This is why it’s so important for celebrities and addict advocates who have experience with addiction and recovery to speak up. Their voice can be heard so that the rest of the recovery community can be heard too.

As a result of the need and demand for more treatment in the Texas area, we at The Watershed felt it was our responsibility to open up a Texas facility this year. If you are one of the 63.9% people that is struggling to get clean and sober, call us today, we can help you get there. No one need suffer alone from drug and alcohol abuse. There is hope.
