Marijuana Effects on Pregnancy: Drug Should Have Warning Labels

Sharethis Watershed

The American Medical Association (AMA) made a statement this past week that it is advocating for medical and recreational marijuana products to be required to have warning labels, specifically to prevent use by women who are pregnant.

Marijuana Effects on Pregnancy

The decision was made based on previous research that suggested the use of marijuana may actually be linked with premature birth, low birth weight, and even behavioral issues in children.

The AMA, along with other medical professionals, wants warning labels about the drug to be posted wherever marijuana is sold for either recreational or medical use. The warning labels would mimic those that can be found on other prescription drugs, tobacco, and/or alcohol.

And since there are warning labels that are on those products, Dr. Diana Ramos, a physician with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), who suggested the warnings at an AMA meeting this past week, stated the obvious, “So why not do the same thing with marijuana since it is the most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy?” ACOG issued a statement his past summer that backs up Dr. Diana Ramos’s statement about marijuana as being the most commonly used illicit drug during pregnancy.

As of now, the only state that requires point-of-sale warnings at marijuana dispensaries in regards to the use of marijuana for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, is Oregon.  In Colorado, labels on marijuana products only warn women who are pregnant or breastfeeding that “there may be risks” from using marijuana. Earlier in 2015, Colorado legislators and officials had actually rejected the ban on selling the drug to women who were pregnant.

As marijuana continues to become legal for recreational and medical purposes, new laws will also need to be put into place to help regulate the drug and protect people from any short-term and long-term effects.
