Ideas For Valentine’s Day: Fun Dates For New Relationships

Holidays can be difficult for those in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction – especially holidays like Valentine’s day, where advertising tell us that the only way to tell someone you love them, is to to pop open a bottle of wine and hand out jewelry.

But what if you’re in a new relationship? Maybe you’re not in a place either emotionally or financially where you want to go out and spend a lot of money on frivilous gifts and entertainment in the name of Valentine’s Day. With that being said, if you’re looking to avoid some awkward, pressure-filled situations, check out these more realistic ideas for celebrating Valentine’s Day with your partner in recovery.

Ideas For Valentine’s Day

Movie Theater: As far as ideas for Valentine’s Day go, a movie theater may seem a little on the less-romantic side. But, sitting in the dark, holding hands, and just kicking back watching a great flick may be the best idea for both new relationships and experienced couples.

Dinner at a nice restaurant: If you’re really trying to impress your significant other, a nice candle-lit dinner would definitely do the trick. Since you don’t drink, maybe getting a nice bottle of sparkling cider or juice can set the mood; all that matters is that you two are together, enjoying great conversation and the company of the one you care about.

Picnic on the beach: This idea for Valentine’s Day is extremely romantic and heartwarming. Of course, if you live in a place where there is snow everywhere, then this obviously won’t work. As far as the people who live in warm environments with a beach, go for it – just don’t get sand in your food.

Cooking class: Just make sure you let your significant other know that he/she absolutely does not need to improve his/her cooking, but that you thought it would be fun to learn how to make a great meal, together.

Drive-in movie: Drive-in movies are always an intimate setting for Valentine’s Day. Don’t forget to bring the snacks!

Head to the Arcade: It may seem cheesey as far as ideas for Valentine’s Day go, but in reality, arcades are proven to put a smile on someone’s face because it “makes them feel like a kid again.”

Mini Golf:  Along with an arcade, mini golf might also be a little cheesy, but it gives the guy a chance to pull that classic move where he puts his arms around the girl’s shoulders and teaches her how to, “properly hit the ball.”

Singles party: This sounds pretty self-explanatory, but it’s a real thing. Being single on Valentine’s Day, while everyone is getting flowers and chocolates, can make you a little bitter. So, have a party for the single ones!! Get a piñata and some music, and boom: single’s party. Just get some finger food, soda, coffee, and water and you’re good to go.

Being Single on Valentine’s Day

The emotions and emptiness you can potentially feel about being single on Valentine’s Day is nothing to drink or drug over. Many people are in the same boat as you, and they’re not going to let it ruin their time.  Valentine’s Day is just another day, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a great one!
