How Long Does It Take to Break An Addiction?

How-Long-Does-It-Take-to-Break-An-AddictionThe truth is there isn’t a magical number. It can take anywhere from 18 days – 254 days to break a bad habit according to a 2010 UK study reported by TODAY Health. Now that we know the basics of breaking a bad habit, what’s the average time needed for a person to break their addiction?

Breaking A Bad Habit

How long does it take to break an addiction to alcohol and/or drugs? This number varies and really depends on how willing, honest, desperate, and open-minded the person is to recovery. Some have found that once they were really ready to stop and wanted it bad enough, the habit was broken instantly, while others may struggle a little while longer. It really depends on the person and their journey.

Since the recovery process from an alcohol and/or drug addiction is different for everyone, various treatment programs and sober living environments are usually favored to help the addict/alcoholic transition to recovery. In order to continue on the path of recovery without relapse, it is important for a person to have a sober support network, a safe and sober living environment, and to be working a program of recovery.

Understanding Addiction

In order to truly grasp the recovery process, understanding the disease of addiction is beneficial.  Addiction is a brain disease and not a moral failing. This is why medical treatment is one that requires healing from the mind and body because these are the affected areas.  It is also important to know that the person didn’t become addicted in an instant and they may not recover as quickly either.  As long as they continue to diligently put one foot in front of the other and consciously work toward bettering themselves, then more freedom and relief may come over time.

So, all in all, how long does it take to break an addiction?  When it comes to being addicted to alcohol and/or drugs, the recovery process isn’t contingent to a specific deadline.  The alcoholic and/or addict will recover from their addiction in the amount of time that it takes for them to be willing to dive into doing the work on themselves and continually take daily reprieves to keep in check.
