How Does Drug Addiction Happen?

drug addictionIf you or a loved one has suffered from a drug addiction, then you probably know how vicious of a disease it can be. But how does an addiction to drugs actually start? It can be confusing, even if you have first-hand experience with addiction.

Understanding Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a disease, and it requires treatment for a successful recovery, much like any other illness does. There are many of reasons why people start using drugs, including to self-medicate, experiment, fit in, peer pressure, etc. But how does drug addiction manifest itself after drug use?

Drug addicts set off an “allergy” when they use drugs, and this is what makes them obsess about their next fix. They display a compulsion to use, whereas those who are not drug addicts do not have the same physical and mental obsession.

Abusing substances, like tobacco, alcohol, inhalants, and marijuana, at an early age and then later on in adolescence increases the likelihood of using other drugs and developing a drug addiction, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). While this is a possible factor, it is not a requirement for those suffering from a drug addiction to have abused drugs at a younger age. Sometimes, people don’t develop a drug addiction until far later in their life.

How Did I Get Addicted to Drugs?

Some people get addicted to drugs like heroin or morphine after taking prescribed painkillers, like OxyContin, Percocet, or Dilaudid, and becoming hooked but needing a cheaper alternative. Others drug addicts may have gotten hooked after using multiple substances. Sometimes, people get addicted to drugs after continually taking the drug and then realizing there is a physical and/or psychological dependence shortly after.

Regardless as to how you went from abusing a drug to suffering from a full blown drug addiction, you somehow ended up in a mental and physical obsession over drugs. While it may seem overwhelming, there is treatment for drug addiction.

What Do I Have to Do to Recover from Addiction?

Recovering from addiction isn’t easy, but the life you will live in sobriety is completely worth it. You won’t have to wake up in need of your next fix. You won’t feel the guilt and the shame over needing to turn to a substance for every problem in your life. The best way to start your recovery is by going to a medical detox and inpatient drug rehab. From there, you can continue working on your program of recovery by attending support groups, counseling, and/or 12 Step Fellowships.

It is completely possible to recover from drug addiction, but you have to be willing to do the work to live that life in sobriety. The Watershed Texas offers a full continuum of care for the treatment of drug addiction and alcoholism. For help today, call The Watershed Texas at 1-800-861-1768.
