Hollywood News: Clean and Sober Celebrities

Addiction is a disease that does not discriminate, even when it comes to celebrities!  You have probably heard of many widely-known stars in the Hollywood news that headed off to treatment or even went back and forth to multiple rehabilitation centers, like Lindsay Lohan. Some celebrities have decades of clean time under their belt, and yet, you don’t hear much about their strength, experience, and hope in the Hollywood news as often.

Hollywood News

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey is typically known in Hollywood for her amazing vocal talent, which has been compared to that of Madonna.  The public was not expecting her to share recently that she had celebrated sobriety from alcohol for 12 years.  Claiming herself as an alcoholic that couldn’t help but take a drink each day, Del Rey was shipped off to a boarding school at the young age of 14 when both of her parents became concerned.  Looking back on her experience, she said that she now has “a completely different way of living” and that her addiction was “the worst thing that ever happened” to her.

Bradley Cooper

Known in the Hollywood news for popular movies like The Hangover, Bradley Cooper has surprisingly been in recovery from drugs and alcohol since the age of 29, making him about 10 years clean!  He has explained that seeking recovery became a priority because he no longer knew his own identity and he was on the brink of destroying the career he had been working so hard to build.  Hollywood news can highlight negative moments in a celebrity’s life, but Cooper now has a much better mindset.  He feels comfortable being himself stating, “The one thing that I’ve learned in life is the best thing I can do is embrace who I am and then do that to the fullest extent, and then whatever happens, happens.”

Jamie Lee Curtis

Recently saving a woman’s life after noticing her having a reaction from the combination of her medication and an alcoholic beverage, Jamie Lee Curtis is familiar with substance troubles herself.  Crediting her life in recovery as “the single greatest accomplishment” of her life, the well-known actress became hooked on prescription medication following a surgery at around 35 years old.  She has spoken in Hollywood news about how her addiction was ruining the life she was living, so she knew she had to change her ways.  Also having admitted a previous problem with alcohol, Curtis has proudly shared that she has well over 10 years off all drugs and alcohol.

Robin Williams

In Hollywood news, you might know him as Mrs. Doubtfire or Genie from Aladdin, but you might not know that Robin Williams is a recovering addict.  Formerly hooked on alcohol and cocaine, Williams was able to collect a couple decades of clean time after a series of motivating events pushing him to get clean, like a dear friend’s drug overdose and finding out he would be a dad soon.  Despite a relapse in 2006, Williams bounced back and went straight back to a treatment center stating, “It’s hard admitting it, then once you’ve done that, it’s real easy.”  Robin Williams sure learned a lesson or two in humility as he checked himself back into rehab recently to help maintain his sobriety. Robin Williams rep reported to TMZ “After working back-to-back projects, Robin is simply taking the opportunity to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud.” in response to Williams checking himself into the Lindstrom, Minnesota Hazelden Addiction Treatment Center this week. We wish Mr. Williams the best of luck on his continued journey in recovery.

There you have it – even celebrities mentioned in the Hollywood news can be affected by the disease of addiction.  Joy does not come from anything materialistic that you possess or achieve, but it very well may come from the process of working on yourself to be the best you, just like these celebrities did when battling their addictions.
