CDC: Six People Die A Day From Alcohol Poisoning, Most Are Middle-Aged White Males

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report states that on average, six people die each day from alcohol poisoning, and most are actually middle-aged white men.

CDC Statistics On Binge Drinking & Alcohol Poisoning

According to the new CDC report, an outstanding 76% of those affected by alcohol poisoning are between the age of 35-64, and roughly three of every four people are men. The deaths from alcohol poisoning are mainly linked to binge-drinking, which equates to eight drinks per binge.

“We were surprised that these deaths were as concentrated among middle-aged adults as they were,” said Bob Brewer, who heads the alcohol program at CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. “…If we could eliminate binge drinking, we could dramatically reduce the number of deaths from alcohol poisoning.”

The CDC death toll was taken from the 2010 to 2012 death certificate data total which showed an estimated 2,221 U.S. citizens had died each year as a direct result of alcohol poisoning. Out of that total, 68% were white, but the highest rate of deaths per million populations was American Indians and Alaska natives.

What is interesting about these numbers is that most people think binge-drinking is associated with the younger generation, but these statistics show that middle-aged drinkers are more at risk.

What Is Binge Drinking?

Binge drinking is simply defined as having five or more drinks (four or more for women) in an estimated two to three hour period, depending on the alcohol content in the drink itself. One drink is actually considered 5 ounces of wine, 1.5 ounces of hard liquor, or 12 ounces of beer.
