Abby Wambach: Soccer Star Pleads Guilty To DUI Arrest

Abby Wambach, international soccer star, was recently arrested and pleaded guilty to drunken driving charges. The Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge ordered Wambach to attend and complete a drug and alcohol assessment and treatment program, install a breathalyzer in her vehicle, and abstain from drinking alcohol while on probation. If she abides by the rules, she could see her DUI charges dismissed in a year. This diversion program is offered to first time offenders.

What Happened?

Wambach, 35, was pulled over by Portland police on April 2, 2016 at 11:00 PM after she had blown through a red-light.  The retired soccer player and two-time Olympic gold medalist had failed the field sobriety test and was then booked into the county jail on DUI charges. Her BAC (blood alcohol content) was .13%. The legal BAC limit is .08% in Oregon.

What Now?

Since the incident, Abby Wambach has not only made a public apology on her Facebook page, but she also spoke about the matter at the 2016 OWN IT Summit at Georgetown University. She shared her experience and strong warnings on CBS This Morning.

In the interview, she expressed the importance of her mistake and how others can avoid heading down the same path. She didn’t just talk about it, she owned her part.

Drinking and driving is dangerous and 100% avoidable, and we are glad to see stars like Abby Wambach not just own up to her mistakes, but share her experience so that we can help prevent future drunk drivers and ultimately drunk driving deaths.
